CURRICULUM

  • Jazz Piano Performance
The essence of jazz performance is improvisation, and it's nothing but instantaneous composing. The lesson will start with theory, particularly chord scale and voicing. Then, we will cover the unique rhythm of jazz. The piano technique that is also unique to jazz will be covered. The lesson is customized according to the level of each student and all instruments are welcome.

  • Jazz for Classically Trained Pianists
If you can play Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart very well but you do not know how to play jazz improvisation, this course is for you! Although Takeshi is a jazz pianist, he has a keen interest in classical piano repertoire and he has studied with some classical pianists, including Franz Liszt's grand pupil. He can help you cross the bridge between classical music and jazz. The course is very popular in New York.

  • Pop, Rock, and Blues Piano
America is the home of modern music—Gershwin, Blues, Rock, and Pops. From the great experience of working with local musicians, learning from local musicians, and teaching local students, Takeshi is excited to teach you this beautiful American music.

  • Digital Music Production
Digital music production has never been more powerful, thanks to the amazing development of digital technologies. Using a digital audio workstation (DAW), such as Ableton and Logic, you will learn the art of composing, arranging, recording, mixing, and mastering to produce your own music. If you want to be a beatmaker, this is your class!

  • Singer/Songwriter (Guitar and/or Piano)
Writing and singing your own songs has its own challenges. It is different from classical composing. Takeshi, who has registered more than 100 songs in the BMI catalogue, will break down a rather complicated process and help you start writing songs in style. New York's own expert vocal coach, Ms. Sally Morgan, will provide support in writing lyrics and singing with a microphone. When you write a great song, a recording session will be coordinated—even performing in New York is on the horizon!

  • Music Theory
Understanding music theory is essential for any serious musician. Takeshi mastered the highest level of music theory at Berklee College of Music and kept studying music in New York with talents who came from all over the world. He will not spare sharing his knowledge on how to apply the theory in your composition and performance.

  • Composition
Using music theory and computers, the lesson will focus on writing, producing, and publishing your own compositions in the style of your choice, including, jazz, pop, classical, film scoring, jingle, or any other type of music.

  • Building Relative Pitch
Arguably, to become a successful musician depends on whether you have relative pitch. In other words, if you have relative pitch, then you have the key to becoming a successful musician. They say that it is hard to teach but, in this course, we will start by defining it and explaining how you can obtain it and apply it in your composition and performance.

piano, jazz improvisation, composition & production

    Takeshi Asai

He is a native of Japan, where discipline is the core of education. Mr. Asai was an award-winning manager at IBM, a company where intelligence is the life blood. As an alumni, honor student from Berklee College of Music, Takeshi Asai has gone on to become one of the most prominent jazz pianists in New York City. Frequently he tours Europe and Asia, earning a strong reputation in the international jazz communities.

Takeshi as an educator, hasn't spared his knowledge and experience of being an active performing pianist with his students. As a result, he's yielded many students that are scholarship winners and career oriented, professional musicians. His method is progressively unique, but it's also been time tested throughout his career, that spans more than twelve years in New York. His piano pedagogy has been developed and sustained not only by jazz talents, but also by world-class concert pianists in Boston, New York and Paris. Takeshi is the "great grandson" in Franz Liszt's pupil linage!

In addition to his amazing career as a performer, he is an active composer and producer. His works are used by many singer/songwriters and Broadway theater companies in New York. Also an avid audio engineer, he owns DTC Music Productions, where he's been engaged in numerous music productions. Takeshi Asai is eager to share advanced production/engineering skills and techniques with his students.

Mr. Asai currently lives in Westchester with his wife. More of his story is covered in the Westchester Magazine in 2014.
